Echigo Yuzawa Hot Springs
”The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country. The earth lay white under the night sky” – is a famous from the very first page of Yukiguni, or Snow Country, by Kawabata Yasunari, a Nobel Prize winner in literature. Echigo Yuzawa, the stage for this literature and a region covered in snow has a history of a hot spring resort dating a few centuries back and has been one of the most famous hot spring region in Japan ever since. The surrounding mountains are opened during the winter as skiing & snowboarding resorts, and the region is easily accessible from Tokyo. In addition to the hot spring baths available hotels there are a number of stop-by-hot springs as well as public bathhouses. A slow and warm bath in the hot spring is sure to take away the fatigue from a day in the snow resort.

Osawayama Hot Springs
Osawayama Hot Springs is best known for its quality spring water that has high effects on smoothening your skin. Like Echigo Yuzawa, Osawayama Mountain also has a ski slope open on its mountainside during the winter and the hot springs are located at its foot as if being surrounded by the snowy mountains. The spring water is crystal clear and hugs your skin softly, allowing it to become fine and smooth after a soothing bath.

Iwamuro Hot Springs
Iwamuro Hot Springs have flourished as a therapeutic bathing area and a hot spring resort for travelers on Kitaguni Highway and worshippers to Echigo Ichinomiya Yahiko Shrine during the Edo Period. The spring that first welled in 1713 known as Reigan-no-yu is famous for its legend of a hawk healing its wound by bathing in it and flying off. The town is also known as the origin of Niigata Geiko (geisha), and in the evenings you can see geikos heading to the parlors, or hear some music of the shamisen (three-stringed instrument). Iwamuro creates a marvelous townscape with cherry blossoms in springtime.

Tsukioka Hot Springs
One of the best hot springs in Niigata Prefecture, Tsukioka Hot Springs is located in the center of a quiet and calming countryside. The spring water has a clear, greenish shine and contains rich hydrogen sulfite. The top quality spring water soothes your skin as well as warms up your body from inside, and for its health benefits it is known as the spring of perpetual youth and longevity. Nozawa Hot Springs
Nozawa is famous as one of Japan’s largest and most popular ski resort as well as the origin of the Nozawana pickles. Norikura Highland Hot Springs 

The Norikura Highland Hot Springs (Shinshu Norikura Kogen Norikura Onsenkyo) is a hot spring resort located in the Norikura Highlands 3,000 meters above sea level looking up at the Kengamine, the highest peak of Norikuradake. It is consisted of the hot springs Norikura, Suzuran, Azumi Norukura and Wasabizawa. Among all, the Norikura Onsen is perhaps the most famous as its milk white strong acid water has great effects on various troubles and strong sterilization.

Shirahone Hot Springs

Shinshu Takayama Hot Springs (Shinshu Takayama Onsenkyo)
Shinshu Takayama Onsenkyo is the general name for the seven hot springs – Warabi, Koyasu, Yamada, Okuyamada, Matsukawa Keikoku, Goshiki and Shichimi – scattered around Matsukawa Valley at the upper stream of Matsukawa River. Each of them have unique characteristics including Yamada Onsen with a history of 200 years and Goshiki Onsen which its color changes into five different ways accordingly to weather and sunlight, but are very small in size, as there are only zero to two accommodations for each spot. A very quiet and cozy area to enjoy the hot springs in the nature.

Nishi Izu (West Izu Area) Toi Hot Springs and Dogashima Hot Springs


The Toi and Dogashima Hot Springs are best known for providing fascinating grand scenic view looking out across the Suruga Bay and moreover Mount Fuji. The history of Toi is relatively new dating only a few centuries back to the Edo when it was unexpectedly found in the course of digging a gold mine.Dogashima as well as Toi is a good tourist spot to visit as it has many nature attractions besides the hot springs.
West Izu - Dogashima
Hot springs here are even newer for it has only been half a century since its discovery right by the coast. The most attractive point about Dogashima is probably the wide variety of scenic view enjoyed while bathing in the springs, from looking out the water of rias and bizarre rocks, outdoor spring listening to the sound of the surf and so on.

Atami Hot Springs 
Shizuoka is known for having a number of excellent hot springs but fame and popularity of Atami Onsen is exceptional as it is counted as one of the Three Major Hot Springs of Japan together with Beppu (Oita) and Nanki Shirahama (Wakayama). The history of Atami Onsen goes back to about 1,250 years ago during the Nara Period when a monk found hot water welling inside the ocean. The name Atami which literally means “hot ocean” is said to come from this discovery. The area started to flourish as a hot spring resort later on during the Edo Period especially favored by the Tokugawa family. Atami continues to be a hot spring resort today with more modern tourist attractions in addition to preserving history and tradition.

Ito Hot Springs
One of the most famous hot springs in Shizuoka Prefecture alongside of Atami, the Ito Onsen is a representative spa resort of the eastern Izu area. The history is long as it was discovered during the Heian Period (late8C-late12C) and like Atami the area prospered as a good hot spring resort during Edo. The atmosphere along the Matsukawa River lined up with hotels and inns is tranquil and quiet, attracting many litterateurs over the years.
