Vol.3

When the entrance of the rikishi is over in the order of West first and then East, the yokozuna comes in. A yokozuna is accompanied by two attendants tachimochi and tsuyubarai (these attendants of course are rikishi as well), and wears a shimenawa (a sacred rope in Shintoism) in addition to the kesho mawashi.
The crowd gets especially excited with the entrance of yokozuna and welcomes him with a roar of cheers.
After making his entrance, the yokozuna stands in the middle of the dohyo, claps his hands and then stamps on the dohyo (shiko wo fumu).

When he does this shikofumi, voices shouting out “yoishoh!” rise from all over the audience. Although it’s not a rule to do so, I too tried shouting this phrase.

A shikofumi
The shikofumi with the crowd’s “yoishoh!” shouts. This too is a ritual stamping on the evil spirits underneath the ground.

When the yokozuna completes the ritual and leaves the dohyo, the matches of the maku-uchi rikishi begins at last!

The matches of the great maku-uchi rikishi who have names with ranks were so powerful and full of dignity. Along with the non-stop cheers rising from the audience, I felt myself becoming more and more enthused.

Among the deep and thick cheers of guys, I could also hear cheers of women and little kids. The powerful cheers of the little ones were especially pleasing and made me want to cheer for the rikishi they were cheering for.

Push him out and stay inside - the fierce battle at the rim of the dohyo
The first to go out of the dohyo loses the match.

harite
A strong and fast harite striking out from the gargantuan rikishi.
Wouldn’t want that hitting you, would you?
